Effective Methods to Motivate Reluctant Learners Who Hate Studying

Most students don’t like studying because the learning process isn’t made fun enough for them. Parents and educators need to understand that studying is not just a drill; in order to actually develop an interest for the different subjects, students have to be shown that learning new things can actually be as exciting as playing a video game!

Here are some ways to motivate young students to learn:
▪Make topics relatable. Students should be able to apply the concepts you teach real-life situations.
▪Study sessions should be made as interactive as possible. Ask them questions and encourage debates among the students.
▪Make them watch interesting videos which will help them to learn difficult concepts.
▪Study sessions need not be at the study table alone! For instance, you can arrange for a trip to the museum to make history lessons more interesting.
▪Encourage them with the help of rewards. Celebrate achievements however small they might be!
▪Don’t always try to be in control of everything. Let the children choose what they want to study.
▪Know which style suits the children best. For instance, some children are more receptive to visual cues while others love auditory ones. Some would love to watch a presentation and others would love to listen to a song!
When it comes to subjects such as English and history, use stories and try roleplay as well. Or maybe get an animated video or a comic to engage their attention.

The problem is that instead of looking for ways to encourage them to approach school work with a different mindset, educators and parents often end up labeling a reluctant young learner as a lazy and problematic child.

Educators have to be patient as well as be proactive because there is no one all-encompassing “one size fits all” method to encourage students to learn. And this can get more difficult when educators have to deal with more students than they can handle at a time. Parents can also consider private tuitions to facilitate better learning and to ensure that their child gets the individual attention they need.
