It’s important that your children are able to comprehend and go through reading material effortlessly right from the start. Inculcating the habit of reading in them from a young age will ensure that they are able to read and scan through content without facing any trouble, irrespective of the subject.

Polishing your children’s reading skill is crucial to their success in life. This is because this skill will help them every day, in school, and later on when they start working. So don’t forget to put in some extra effort to enhance this skill! Here are some tips for the same:

1)  Improve comprehension
To enhance reading skills, don’t just focus on the speed of reading. Your child should be able to understand what he or she reads. Encourage them to ask you for help when they get stuck. Teach them to use the dictionary when they don’t know the meaning of unfamiliar words.

Ask them questions about the material after they are done with the reading. Ensure that they think as well and understand what the reading material is all about. After all, just uttering the words loudly without understanding them is hardly of any use, is it?

2) Ask them to read loudly.
This will help you to understand whether they are pronouncing the words correctly. You can stop them and correct their pronunciation wherever required. Additionally, you will also get to know whether they are aware of the punctuation. Are they changing their tone when they spot an exclamation mark? Are they pausing when they notice a full stop? Help them out if they are not!

Apart from the obvious benefits of reading loudly, research also suggests that reading text out loud helps you to retain more of what you have read.

Helpful tips to improve reading skills in Primary School:
▪Ask your child to move his/her finger across the text while reading. This will help him/her to keep track and not get lost.
Your child should look at phrases instead of words in isolation.
▪Ask them questions after they finish reading each paragraph. Take breaks
▪Highlighting important pieces of information while reading will make their work easier when it’s time to for note-taking.
After acquiring a certain level of expertise in reading fluently and with appropriate speed, help them to learn to scan the piece of text before starting to read. This will help them to extract key pieces of information quickly.
When you begin, make it fun for your child. Give them reading material about things they are actually interested in, Comic books are a great way to start!

If possible, help your child with personal guide to learn various languages such as English, Chinese,, French, Spanish… etc, to develop a multilingual personality from the childhood. The vacation time or Summer holidays can be the best choice for your child to enroll with language classes..
